A very interesting sound detecting robot kit. The four built-in microphones detect the sound source and the robot turns and moves towards it. Just clap and the robot will come to you. Clap again from another position and the robot will turn and move in that direction.

Assembly required, so if you are willing to give a kid not only a toy but some knowledge and an opportunity to tamper with technology this could be a great gift and can also serve as great educational toys.

If only it would vacuum the floor when chasing your child around the house!!!

Sunday Parkways - The People Powered Festival

According to bikeportland.org - there’s a lot of buzz around town for the City of Portland’s third Sunday Parkways event this weekend. PBOT and scores of volunteers will create a nine-mile, people-powered festival through Southeast Portland that is sure to draw thousands to the streets. Adding to the fun this Sunday is a performance by the Ginger Ninjas, a bike-powered band led by Xtracycle co-founder Kipchoge Spencer.

The two-loop Sunday Parkways route will go through Buckman, Kerns, Laurelhurst, Richmond, and Sunnyside neibghborhoods. One of the loops is a relatively flat, and the other, more challenging one tackles Portland’s famous urban volcano, Mt. Tabor.

Given Southeast Portland’s well-known love for street culture, carfree living, and a two-wheeled way of life, this Sunday Parkways could break records for attendance. It’s also the last of three such events this year, so many folks who have not been able to make the other two, might be showing up in Southeast to join the fun.

CONSUMER PRODUCT SAFETY COMMISSION AND BABYSWEDE LLC ANNOUNCE RECALL OF BABYBJÖRN^® BABYSITTER BALANCE

CLEVELAND, OH – July 28, 2009 — BabySwede LLC of Cleveland, Ohio, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, is conducting a voluntary safety recall of the BABYBJÖRN^® Babysitter Balance and BABYBJÖRN^® Babysitter Balance Air, after small metal pieces were found in the padded section of the babysitter’s fabric seat. The recall to inspect the seat padding and attach an updated warning label covers 6,468 Babysitter Balances sold in the U.S.

While no incidents related to the pieces have been reported, BabySwede, the North American distributor, received notification from BabyBjörn AB, the manufacturer, that two consumers in Japan had found small metal pieces in the padded section of the babysitter’s fabric seat. After further inspection by BabyBjörn AB of 15,000 babysitters, five more small metal pieces were found. As a precaution, BabySwede is performing a voluntary recall of the product.

The Babysitter Balance subject to this recall is model 0090 and is sold under the brand name “BABYBJÖRN^®.” It can be used for infants weighing between 8 pounds and 29 pounds and is sold in five colors: Black/Silver, Black/Red, Dark Blue/Blue, Brown/Beige and White Air.

The Babysitter Balance has been sold nationwide at independent juvenile retailers, mass retailers, Internet retailers, and catalogs from September 2008 through July 2009 at a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $169.95 for the BABYBJÖRN^® Babysitter Balance and $189.95 for the BABYBJÖRN^® Babysitter Balance Air.

The Portland Bastille Day Committee will present the 7th Annual Bastille Day Festival at Jamison Square Park on Saturday, July 11 from 12:00 noon to 8 p.m. The event is free, open to the public and for people of all ages. Bastille Day festivals - held in cities all around the world - celebrate the storming of the Bastille Prison on July 14, 1789, an event which is recognized as the start of the French Revolution. The 2008 event in Portland was among the largest such festivals on the West Coast, with close to 6,000 visitors, and was filmed by PBS for a documentary that was shown nationally on TV. This year's festival will feature a variety of vendors and organizations offering French wine, cuisine, music, art and sport.

Last night we had dinner at a friend's house. At some point in the evening, my two year old son required a diaper change. As I wandered back to their nursery to borrow the changing table I noticed that my friend Deb had recently redone one of the walls in her son Wilson's nursery. The idea was so cute and so affordable that I just had to share it. Using Lisa Dejon's Animal Alphabet Flash Cards (although there are a whole host of flashcards that would work for this project) and some removable poster putty that you can find at almost any hardware store (we found some at Officemax) , Deb created a large wall collage. I included a picture of the finished look that I took with my iPhone (sorry about the image quality).

Portland's Popular Fountains

How many fountains does Portland have?
The Portland Water Bureau maintains 17 decorative fountains (not including our world famous Benson Bubblers).

What are the best fountains for swimming in?
You can't actually swim in any of the fountains, per se, but you can splash around in them. The most popular ones for doing that are Salmon Street Springs (SW Portland) , Jamison Square (NW Portland), Holladay Park Fountain (NE Portland), and McCoy Fountain (North Portland).

Is the water safe to drink?
Not unless you like drinking swimming pool water! Our fountains have about as much chlorine as public swimming pools.

Don't they waste water?
No. To conserve water, most of our fountains recycle / reflow the water (another reason not to drink it).

How often are the fountains cleaned?
The fountains are cleaned and maintained regularly.

What time are the fountains open (turned on)?
Most fountains operate spring through fall from 6:30 am to 8 pm. The fountains are turned off in winter, and when they require maintenance and repairs.

Are they safe to play in?
We do not have lifeguards at any of our fountains, and people should use caution when splashing around. This particularly applies to children. Slippery surfaces, rapidly moving water, and pools of water require careful attention to ensure safe fun.

From the beginning of the planning efforts for the Pearl District in the early 1990s, the creation of a network of open spaces was an important goal of both the neighborhood and the City. In 1998, a conceptual plan for the new parks and open spaces was proposed by the Tanner Creek & Water Feature Steering Committee and approved by City Council. Those recommendations served as a point of departure for planning the district's parks.

In June 1999, Peter Walker & Partners, a landscape architecture firm, was retained to provide concepts for three new parks between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues in the River District. They developed and refined plans for the parks with input from a Project Steering Committee and two public workshops. The final plan is characterized by a series of recurring elements which strengthen the connection between each of the three parks.

Located between NW Johnson and Kearney, Jamison Square was the first to be developed. It is named in honor of William Jamison, whose presence was pivotal in the development of the River District. He was an exceptional person in his ability to influence and connect with a wide variety of people. His personal magnetism, in addition to the size and scope of his art gallery, drew many people into the Pearl District.

The focal point of the park is a fountain which simulates a shallow tidal pool. Water cascades from stone joints into low pools as the fountain continuously recirculates treated water with energy efficient pumps and motors.

In 2006 artist Mauricio Saldaña, commissioned by the Portland Pearl Rotary Club, created a red granite sculpture modeled after a brown bear. The bear's name is Rico Pasado, meaning "rich past," in reference to the history of the bears that once roamed this area as well as the Rotary International Centennial. This is why the sculpture is also referred to as the "centennial bear."

Another art installation in the park is Contact II, the 1972 metal sculpture by Alexander Liberman that was donated to the City of Portland in 2002 by Ed Cauduro in memory of his parents.
